Hello! It’s JULY and we’ve had so much going on! Vacation Bible School was wonderful! The people we have in our Rockport Family have always traditionally been some of the best volunteers in the world…and this year is definitely no exception! I have to thank all of you who had anything to do with our VBS this year! Whether you were a teacher, or donated things to the cause, or volunteered to do other classes or cooking – or ANYTHING, it was a great time… and I am excited for next year! I truly couldn’t have done it without any of you, with me coming in so close to VBS week- Thanks for your patience as I settled in that week!
Coming up we are going to have a VBS Reunion Cookout – families and volunteers will all be invited to join us on July 28th from 6 to 8pm… Hot Dogs and Fun!
We have also begun or New Mission Project, which will be Church-wide, all of us working together a team to do something good in the world…imagine everything can get done together! Our New Mission this year is called the Zoe Ministry. If you would like to learn more on your own about Zoe Ministry the web site is: http://www.zoeministry.org/
“In Many African Countries orphaned children are raising their brothers and sisters due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In response, ZOE Ministry shares the Love of Christ and gives hope to vulnerable children in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Rwanda through:
Giving Hope Empowerment Project
Training in farming, animal husbandry, vocational skills, income-generating activities, HIV/AIDS education, health and hygiene. The training frees orphans from poverty and dependency within 2-3 years in the program.
Relief Ministry
Including food, school fees, clothing, clean water, and medical care.”
We are hoping to schedule someone to come in to give us a presentation about Zoe Ministry this fall.
Don’t forget our Church Picnic on July 18th!
And on Wednesday, August 11th from 6:30 to 8PM, we will have a summer gathering for kids pre school age thru 6th grade…”Wednesday” School! Come and have fun with us before Sunday School starts!

Class begins with a time for the children to share what happened in their lives during the past week. This sharing process gives them a chance to learn the importance of confidentiality. Next comes the lesson followed by a game of dodge ball and snack. Brad and Kelly Scotten feel that by combining personal sharing at the beginning of class with a competitive game at the end, the students develop closer relationships.

A Haroset Snack

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd Grade Class had a snack of haroset today. For those of you not familiar with the ingredients, haroset is a mixture of apples, almonds, sugar, cinnamon, lemon rind and grape juice served on matzo crackers. Thanks for sharing some with me. It was delicious!

3 apples, peeled and chopped
1/3 cup chopped almonds
1/2 T. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
grated lemon rind
2 T. grape juice

Mix together in a large bowl.
Serve with matzo crackers.

Christians in the World, a Sunday Morning Class for Adults

Christians in the World is a Sunday School group of adults who share ideas and relate scripture to the news. Twice a month we meet in the chapel to review the "Wired Word" or other readings and discuss current events from a Christian perspective. We reflect how our daily lives intersect with the global community. In the last few months we have studied disasters, school events, veterans, ministry, poverty, the Christmas season, and the environment. It is a fun dialogue inwhich everyone contributes as he or she is comfortable. Some people come as regulars and some come once in a while - you cannot fall behind in our studies. We welcome visitors. If you are looking for a way to meet nice people and get a refresher on world news and what the Bible has to say about it, come, talk, and listen. On opposite Sundays we meet very informally at Panera Bread near the corner of Wooster and Center Ridge Roads. We talk about the week, our families, and upcoming church activities (mostly we meet in fellowship over coffee and treats).

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd Grade Class began decorating their Easter Tree today. The Easter Tree is a tree to decorate during Lent that reminds us of Jesus. The first ornaments were hung today. They were Easter eggs that the students decorated during class. Easter eggs remind us that Jesus gave new life to everyone.

I wonder what the ornament will be next week...

Four Advent Films Coming to Rockport

November 29, 12:45 pm: WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (1961 – 99 minutes)
A young farm girl (Haley Mills), living in North Country, England, discovers during the Christmas Holidays, a fugitive murderer (Alan Bates) who has taken refuge in the family barn. She and her brother and sister come to believe he is Jesus Christ. This story of childhood innocence, written by Mills’ mother, illustrates well a statement from Mother Teresa. When told by her admirers that the spirit of Christ lived in her, she replied, “No. Rather, I try to see the spirit of Christ in every human being I meet.”

December 6, 12:45 pm: IT HAPPENED ON 5TH AVENUE (1947 – 115 minutes)
It’s not Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL but a wonderful Holiday tale, nevertheless, of a multimillionaire “Scrooge” (Charlie Ruggles) who finds his common humanity once again by being forced, by his demanding daughter (Gale Storm), to live with his fellow-suffering human beings. A bit over-long, this film is still a great joy to experience as it resolutely unfolds.

December 13, 12:45 pm: JOYEUX NOEL (MERRY CHRISTMAS) (2006 – 116 minutes) Here is a film dramatizing what truly happened in 1914 when on a World War I battlefield Scottish, French and German troops declared a Christmas Eve truce and abandoned the trenches for one night to band together in brotherhood, sing together and forget about the brutalities of war. The film’s closing scenes, where our Anglican bishop bawls out and tries to humiliate the Scottish chaplain for his common human impulses, shows clearly why John Wesley left that religious institution. This is the film that makes you proud to be a Methodist! This film is rated PG-13 for war-violence and is not suitable for children.

December 20, 12:45 pm: MEET JOHN DOE (1941 – 123 minutes)
America was in the grip of the Great Depression, over 12 million citizens unemployed, when Frank Capra made his greatest film. Ballplayer Long John Willoughby (Gary Cooper) is fed his lines by a woman reporter (Barbara Stanwyck) which starts a movement of universal, Christ-like brotherhood that ends unemployment. The Pontius Pilates of our day destroy it, and the story reaches its climax on the last floor of a skyscraper on Christmas Eve. What the Stanwyck-character has to say about Jesus in the film’s final minutes will bring tears to the eyes of any listener. This is one of the 10 great films of Cinema history.

The lights on the houses and Christmas trees make us feel better than any other time of the year. The light from the twinkling stars overflow our minds with God’s awesome wonder. The smell of spices from the burning candles reminds us of times spent in the warm love of Grandma’s kitchen during the holidays. Carols abundant with images of lights, stars, candles, and love float through the winter air this time of year. And, a star’s light leads the world to the birthplace of the Baby Jesus. All of this light reminds us that we, too, are the light of the world as Jesus taught us to be.

Please join in this year’s Advent Workshop: Everlasting Light. All ages are welcome to share their light with the world on Saturday, December 5th from Noon to 1:30 p.m. A sign up sheet will be posted on the Christian Education bulletin board outside the church office.

“…yet in thy dark streets shineth, the Everlasting Light, the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee, tonight.”

Light is in us, waiting to be shared with everyone.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Do you knit or crochet? If not, would you like to learn? Join us on Monday afternoons in the Parlor from 1:30 to 2:45 pm. We knit, crochet, chat and laugh. We are Rockport's Prayer Shawl Ministry. If you are not familiar with Prayer Shawls, they are shawls or blankets, knit or crocheted and blessed when finished. Rockport then wraps the finished shawls in tissue paper and gives them away. Shawls are given in celebration or as comfort. Please join us!

Christian Education Mission Project

Christian Education Mission Project... Vacation Bible School kicked-off this year's mission project. We will be supporting Church World Service's Blankets+ program. When disaster strikes, blankets are often needed, blankets and much more: tents, food, emergency supplies. Blankets+ provides blankets and other desperately needed resources. The blankets are available in both winter (grey) and summer (orange) weights. If you are curious, we have a sample of each. The cost of a blanket is only $5. Please help us help CWS respond to those in need with the warmth of God's love with a blanket. I will keep you informed of the number of blankets that can be purchased with the offerings that have been given.
